The lore of Gate to Heavens
To understand this game, forget for a moment that it is an MMORPG.
Think of it as a novel built on Fengshen Yanyi (封神演義), the Investiture of the Gods — one of the great works of classical Chinese literature. In it, gods, immortals, humans and spirits fight over the reordering of the universe after a great war. The dead are raised to divinity, and a new celestial hierarchy is established.
JYSTech took that structure and asked one question:
What would this look like thousands of years in the future?
That was the birth of Gate to Heavens.
The world before the game
Everything points to the creators having imagined a chronology roughly like this.
The First Age
There is only Heaven. The higher beings rule. There is no corruption, and there is no war. The balance is perfect.
The Second Age
Something breaks that balance. Ancient seals begin to fail, and spiritual forces escape. Some immortals want to preserve the order. Others want power.
This is exactly the kind of conflict found in Fengshen Yanyi: not simply good against evil, but a dispute over who holds the legitimacy to rule the new order.
The Third Age
The heavens are reorganised. New dimensions appear, and many worlds are created. Humanity comes to exist inside this new system.
This is where the player is born.
The line every player has read
Every loading screen since 2003 has carried the same words, and now they have a place to sit:
Long time passed away from the human ages. Goddess ‘Zuru’ created the PION in the heavens. For the little gods, peace & glory.
The little gods are not a metaphor. In the tradition this world borrows from, mortals who prove themselves are raised into the celestial order. That is the promise the title makes: the gate to the heavens is something you walk toward.
